What is your role?

My title at CertaSite is Director of Safety & Risk Management. My role is to ensure all team members are supported with the strongest safety knowledge and know-how attitudes in the field of fire protection & life safety, and are equipped with the necessary tools and resources to make their jobs safer and more efficient.

What drew you to this role on the safety team?

I have always been a firm believer and advocate that people are the most valuable asset of any organization. That is why protecting lives and keeping people safe, is the heart and foundation of the Safety Profession. An added perk to this role is the opportunity to work for an organization like CertaSite that shares these same values and principles. My passion has always been invested in working closely with people, guiding decision-making strategies, sharing knowledge and best practices, and providing cooperative coaching to ensure people are able to enjoy life both at work and at home.

A lot of people hear “risk management” and think insurance or paperwork. What does it actually mean for the average CertaSite team member?

It is important to first define ‘Risk’ to better understand ‘Risk Management’. Risk is the probability (likelihood) of an event or action occurring (e.g., a fall from heights), resulting in an undesirable outcome (consequence) such as injury, damage, loss, etc. Risk is inherently present in every activity we perform in life. From making a hot pot of coffee in the morning (Risk: thermal burns from direct contact with hot surfaces or splash hazards), to the travel commute to work (Risk: vehicle accident)…each activity is subject to some degree or level of risk exposure. Risk Management is the process of recognizing and identifying underlying or present risk(s), assessing or evaluating the potential impacts (consequences), and implementing control measures or strategic steps to reduce or mitigate the risk to a level as low as reasonably practicable (ALARP – As Low As Reasonably Practicable). In summary, ‘Risk Management’ is the process integrated in the HOW (safeguards) and the WHY (protect life & property) we operate safely.

What is one mindset shift you would ask every CertaSite team member to make when it comes to safety and risk?

Safety is a personal responsibility. Regardless of title or function at CertaSite, we are all purposed to LEAD to some degree that allows us to make it home at the end of each workday the same way we arrived. Lead with a Safety-First mindset. No job is so important that it cannot be done safely. Please always keep a thoughtful approach in all that you do, every task you perform, every action you commit to, and think about those closest to you.

What is your role?

Fleet Manager

For those who don’t work with fleet directly, can you share what fleet management covers at CertaSite?

Fleet management covers the gas cards drivers use, maintenance on our vehicles, insurance on all vehicles, buying/selling vehicles, and title management for all vehicles operated by a CertaSite team member.

How does fleet management tie into the broader safety mission?

We want our drivers to be as safe as possible on the road, and we want their vehicles to be in the best shape they can be in to help them do so. We are currently working on an upgrade to a new camera system that will help our drivers stay even safer while operating their vehicles, and help us keep our incident numbers at 0. 0 is our favorite number. We want to keep it that way. Having this new technology installed will only enhance that for our safety mission.

What are the most common vehicle-related issues you see, and how can drivers help prevent them?

People don't realize that idling in your vehicle actually will eat away at your mileage, and a ton of people do it. So, when you go in to get an oil change, you could possibly be 1,000 miles behind, which could cause other issues to your vehicle. The best way to prevent that is to turn the vehicle off whenever you are idle and able to do so.

What’s your best piece of advice for staying safe behind the wheel on the job?

There are a lot of distractions that come about nowadays; the best way to stay safe behind the wheel is to turn your phone to silent and stay present while driving. Be mindful of other drivers and stay safe!

At CertaSite, safety is more than a priority; it is part of how we care for our people, our customers, and our communities. Whether you are behind the wheel, on a jobsite, or supporting from the office, every decision matters. By staying alert, speaking up, and taking personal responsibility for safe work, we all help ensure everyone goes home the same way they arrived. Thank you to Jonathan and Jeff for their continued commitment to keeping safety at the center of what we do!
